What is the Human Development Innovation Fund (HDIF)

The Human Development Innovation Fund (HDIF) is a £39.4 million UKAid-funded programme designed to improve human development outcomes for people in Tanzania by funding sustainable solutions for improving the quality and impact of basic services in health, education and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH).

HDIF is managed by Palladium International in partnership with KPMG, Newcastle University, and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS). HDIF also works in close collaboration with Tanzania’s Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH).

What is Innovation?

Innovation can be defined simply as a ‘new idea, device, or method’ and can be viewed as the application of better solutions that meet new requirements or existing market needs; this could be through more effective products, processes, services, technologies, or business models that are made available to markets, governments, and society.

HDIF uses Doblin’s 10 Types of Innovation to frame and evaluate innovations.

Does HDIF have any open calls for funding

No. Please refer to our Opportunities page and to HDIF’s social media profiles at the footer of this page for the latest updates. We do not accept unsolicited requests for funding.

Does HDIF sponsor events

HDIF regularly co-curates events that seek to support the growth of the innovation ecosystem by connecting people and sharing evidence and learning. Funding of up to £5,000 is available for a limited number of events in the year. Typically, we look for events that give HDIF the opportunity to add value through sharing what we or our grantees are learning. To apply for funding, please use our online submission portal at least one month ahead of your event.

Innovation Week is our flagship event platform for the year and we regularly support partners to take part in the week with us.

Does HDIF sponsor events outside of Tanzania?

No. Our funding is for events in Tanzania only.

Is HDIF the same as the UK Department for International Development (DFID)?

No. The Human Development Innovation Fund is a project implemented by Palladium and is funded by the Department for International Development through UKAid.
